Hi! I ❤️ C++ and Qt. 👍🏼 C#, Go, and many other compiled languages. Like less interpreted ones, but are fine. And I also 😍 this new GitHub Discussions-based community. Much better than the old one! |

Hello all. My name is Fran. I am a recently-retired Embedded Systems engineer; mostly "software systems". The majority of my source control experience is with SVN, but I did spend a couple of years using in-house hosted GIT toward the end. However, we didn't use branches or pull requests; we just pushed our changes into the main branch similar to how SVN worked. That worked because most of our repos only had one or two contributors. I recently wrote some code that I would like to share (in 16 Java packages), but am a bit lost getting that set up. So far I have only created a private repo. I then cloned it and got lost trying to add content. I took a look at the "introduction-to-github" skills page, but that starts with "creating a branch" when I need either "creating or setting up a repository". That is certainly a step needed before "creating a branch". That tutorial documented as "the starting point" for GIT users, and it rightfully assumes that a new user wants to contribute to an existing project. So, I have a problem and the documentation there says "report a bug". Clearly my problem is not something that should be placed in a bug-report. So I am making double-use of this topic to see if there is somebody listening who can point me to a better way to learn what I need to know. I will run through the "introduction tutorial" next chance I get. However, I am at the end of my Friday here and may not get much personal time this weekend. So I figured that I would reach out and see what I can learn this way. Thank you for the time spent reading this long-winded introduction. Please let me know if I should start a new discussion for this. However, I will need help knowing how to do that since I am confused by the multitude of discussion choices. |

Hey, I’m Justin. I mostly work around backend/devops/Kubernetes things and like building small tools for my own workflow. This weekend I packaged my terminal setup as a Homebrew-installable project after trying to make my Ubuntu terminal feel closer to my Mac setup. It started as “make my Ubuntu terminal feel closer to my Mac setup”, then became a small Homebrew-installable setup with Ghostty config, zsh, Starship, zoxide, fzf, eza, bat, fd, rg, jq/yq, kubectl aliases, k9s, tmux, and lazygit. Repo: Short write-up: Starship is the prompt layer in the setup. I kept the installer reversible with backup/doctor/uninstall because I’m always nervous about blindly applying dotfiles on a new machine. Look at the below short demo : Contributions and bugfixes will are welcome ;)
